Mom's Quilt

I had started my mom's quilt, originally, for a Christmas gift, but it just wasn't happening. I didn't realize how much piecing there really was. Looked simple enough........ (It helps if you cut the thing right the first time around. HA! Just a little hint for all of you beginners out there. Measure before you cut. DUH!)

I'm very very happy with it. The material I originally bought for the sashing (the material in between the blocks and the inner border) was a lot busier. I liked it, but once I sewed a strip on, I did NOT like it. It was busy. I was really scared for busy. If you have seen my sisters quilt, I LOVE it, but it was busier than my taste, so I wasn't really that happy with it when I finally finished it. I was afraid of a repeat. For this quilt, I really wanted the flowers to be where your eyes went, not the sashing. I didn't want anything to over power the flowers.

I know it's important to be to the taste of the person you are gifting it to, but, if you're not happy with it, or passionate about it, it's hard to give it to them and not feel embarrassed. I am so happy with this one. Allan says this is his favorite that I've made. I think so too, but it's close. I really love Taylors quilt a lot.

I didn't get the top and back put together until about 6:00p, Thursday night. My mom's party was Friday night, and we were going to be out with her all day on Friday, so I HAD to finish it that night. I assumed it would take me 4-5 hours to quilt it and then 2 hours for binding. NOPE! We (Amanda and I) decided that it needed to be quilted a smidge more than I had planned on, so that it would look good on the back too. 10 hours of quilting later, the binding got finished and I went to bed. My head hit the pillow at 4:30a on Friday morning. I was pooped. Then I woke up bright and early on Friday morning, at 8:00a, to take my mom out.

It was worth it though. I'm so happy with it. And my mom and everyone else loved it. Now my step-dad's parents, and step-parents, want me to make them quilts too. HA! Guess I did ok. Huh?

Here are some more pictures of it:

That's some serious commitment to quilting. Good job!
